Virtual Worlds Video Project

This has been such an amazing process. What a sense of accomplishment :) It was a lot of researching and learning how to use new technology, but it was worth all the work. I used trial versions of Camtasia and Magix, and YouTube to learn how to use them. These are both programs that I would like to eventually purchase. There is so much more to learn and different strategies to incorporate. It was at moments frustrating, but when I got over a hurdle, it was exciting. This project was a reminder that I need to set more short term goals.

My project was on Virtual Worlds in Education from a Higher Ed perspective. There is also a focus on collaboration through professional organizations and professional development. I believe that there are many opportunities to use this type of technology in the classroom. The strategies need to be developed, but the possibilities are limitless. I hope you find the information informative and gain a little stronger understanding of how Virtual Worlds tie into learning.

WOW!! Fabulous use of Virtual Worlds in creating your presentation.

I especially liked . . Your use of Avatars for presentation and graphics.
I am not sure about . . .I'm not sure if it was actually the video OR my home bandwidth . . .a couple of times the audio seemed to chop off.
This part of the video was very successful . . .The fluid motion of all graphics. You have a real talent!!
You might be interested in these resources . . .
While watching your video, I wondered about . . .Fitting time for 2nd Life in to my PLN. You used Camtasia and Magix and I used ProShow Gold. I wonder how one can decide which products are the best to invest in both for personal and for professional use.
I have seen others be succeed with video creation when . .

It was amazing. Your topic was perfect for video presentation. I was not fmiliar with what second life and Virtual world can do in the educational setting, but your presentation opened my eyes. It was amazing how avator could represent yourself (I liked your avator). It felet like as if I was in one of the Wii game.

I did not explor magix but I will. This process has been very interesting. There are so many different products/softwares for use to try, and it is very hard to decide which to choose. It is great to share each other's project like this, and share our own experience so that we can learn from each other/ have more understanding of each editing/video creation softwares.

I could see that you struggled with sound glitch between each sceans. I had problem with it too and I needed to be very patient with editing second by second.

Your presentation was amazing and very informative. It is very professional as well. Thank you for sharing.

Thank-you for you kind words. I can't wait to watch yours. It is hard to watch video from home, but I will be able to watch them later on my lunch break. Sound was an issue. The only thing that I did not like about Camtasia is that you could not make the voice fade in and out. Magix does this and I could use audacity, but I thought that for my first video it was best to prepare it all in one format. The only part I used Magix for was the credits. Camtasia does not have the extra little stuff.

I think the best thing to do when deciding what to use is to download the free stuff to try. I spent a lot of time reading reviews on line and kind of went from there.

It is hard to find time to fit things in :) My daughter does gymnastics three days a week for three hours each time. It is an hour drive each way so I usually sit in the car. I have a web and walk and get a great connection there so that is a good time for me to study and try out new technology ideas. Maybe set aside one time period each week just to get started.

Second life was kind of challenging in the beginning because there are so many things you want to do not to be a newbee. ISTE offers newbee socials and has some tutorials and free downloads. There is also lots of information on the web.

It was great to SKYPE with you this evening. Wouldn't my grandmother be shocked at how easily a conversation can take place from here to Germany? Thank you for your flexibility in arranging a time. You're project is AWESOME!! It really makes me excited to try SecondLife. Good luck with your CAM work next quarter . . .I'll miss you in class.

Shannon,

I was really blown away by your project. The virtual settings and avatars were incredible. How do you create the video? Did you record from your computer screen using Camtasia?

The topic is very intriguing as well. The video really makes me want to learn more about virtual worlds and how they could be applied in my classroom.

Awesome presentation on Virtual Worlds. I really like how you created a Avatar to present your information. I learned a lot about online Virtual Worlds and the opportunities out there for education purposes. I am leaving with some great ideas to use in the future. I can relate to your observation that you needed to make short term goals. After completing this project, I realized how important short term goals can be.

Hi Shannon,

WOW! Great job. I really have a sense of what a virtual worlds look and fell like. I have never played around with that aspect of technology, but after watching your presentation, I will have to check into. Thank you for the information about Camtasis because that is another source for creating digital movies. I have to agree with the others. Your use of an Avatar as your speaker made the video session more effective. Great job!

Amazing Shannon!! I love the use of Second Life in your video. Something I have not explored. I have an account with Second Life but have not really spent much time on it. Did you import Second Life screen shots into Windows Movie maker?

Thank-you for the kind words. I am very glad that it has encouraged some of you to look further into virtual worlds. I think that you will be pleasantly surprised :) I am also glad that you liked my avatar. That was a lot of work to learn how to create. You have to buy animations which takes away the newbie walk, new skin and hair, clothes, etc. There are lots of choices. You can buy several skins and clothes etc. You can change your appearance to match where you are in world. I did not explore outside of professional development. Please let me know if you find any wonderful education places.

Laine,

I was able to download Second Life with Windows 7. It may be a different issue.
